Nourry A Lion (Lyon), France, circa 1690. Very fine and rare silver pair-cased single-hand hour-striking clockwatch with alarm. Outer: two-body, back chased and engraved with inhabitedfoliage, band pierced and engraved with exotic birds and styl-izedfoliage, the bezel pierced and engraved with inhabitedfoliage. Inner: two-body, "bassine" with deep back, the backengraved with small rosette, the band pierced and engravedwith inhabited foliage, winding apertures in the back. Silverring, bold champlevé radial Roman numerals, inner quarter-hourring, central silver alarm disc with Arabic numerals andsteel arrowhead pointer indicating hours, blued steel "fleur-de-lis"alarm setting hand. 42 mm, hinged, gilt full plate withturned baluster pillars, fusee and chain, short 3-wheel train with5-leaf pinions, verge escapement with brass balance and shortbalance spring, single-footed cock pierced and engraved withscrolling, alarm with fixed barrel and steel train, striking on abell with both sides of short Notes This is a rare example of a complicated watch with a balance spring, which had been invented about ten years before.
