A. Huguenin, Locle made for Varat a Paris, circa 1865. Very fine and important 18K gold keyless pocket chronometer with pivoted detent escapement. Four-body, “bassine et filets”, reeded band, back with engraved initials, gold hinged cuvette. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute divisions, subsidiary sunk seconds. Blued steel “fleur-de-lis” hands. 42 mm (19’’’), nickel, gold train, 20 jewels, pivoted spring detent escapement, large cut bimetallic compensation balance with gold temperature screws, blued steel helical balance spring with terminal curve and amplitude control device.Signed on the movement under the dial, cuvette signed by the retailer.Diam. 50 mm. Notes An important watch which testifies to a little known aspect of Huguenin’s work. Apparently, in addition to his standard production of high quality commercial watches, Huguenin also occasionally produced important chronometers. A marine chronometer in the Gabriel Moreau Collection, with Louis Richard constant force escapement, is signed “A. Huguenin, Locle”, as is the movement of the present watch.
