Swiss, circa 1830. Fine and rare 18K gold wandering hour watch. Four-body, “bassine et filets”, engine-turned, gold hinged cuvette. Silver engine-turned revolving disc with aperture for Arabic jump hour numerals, outer minute divisions with five-minute Arabic markers. 45 mm (20’’’), frosted gilt, cylinder escapement, three-arm gold balance with flat balance spring.Diam. 50 mm. Notes In a wandering hour watch the hours jump at the window at every hour and the minutes are indicated by the position of the hour window against the minute divisions. Wandering hour watches first appeared in the 17th century. In the 1920s and 1930s, Breguet sold many of them with a system patented in about 1925 by Robert Cart. More recently, the idea has enjoyed a revival, being introduced into the wristwatch. 19th century wandering hour watches are rare.
