Jessop, Southampton Street, Strand, London, No. 2503, hallmarked 1787-88. Fine and unusual 18K gold pair-cased, center-seconds quarter-repeating pocket watch with stop feature. Outer: two-body, polished. Inner: two-body, “bassine”, band engraved and pierced for sound, center engraved with rosette. Eccentric, set at the top, white enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute divisions with five-minute Arabic markers. Gold “beetle and poker” hands. Notes A high quality jeweled watch made during a period when jeweling was reserved for only the best pieces. Josiah Jessop worked in London, where he is recorded circa 1780-1794, at 38 Southampton St., Covent Garden. A center-seconds watch made by him was in the Ilbert collection, now in the British Museum; a gold and enamel watch by him was in the Sternberger collection ; another is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
