Unsigned, the enamel by Richter, Swiss, made for the Chinese Market circa 1815. "Playing at Thread the Needle" Rare and magnificent 18K gold and enamel pearl-set centre seconds watch designed as an urn. Three body, designed as an urn, the band, rim of the back and shaped foot with blue, black and white champleve enamelled decoration, the back with a very fine painted scene featuring two maidens in a park against a blue translucent enamel over engineturning, the front cover with split-pearl set border and bezel, painted enamel scene above the dial, depicting six young children "Playing at Thread the Needle" in a countryside, after the painting by William Hamilton, R.A.; the base fitted with a seal. Gold rectangular hinged cuvettes with canted corners, blue and gilt champleve enamelled decoration. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute and seconds ring. Gold hands. Rectangular gilt brass with canted corners, the plates engraved with a mask and foliage, going barrel, cylinder escapements, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance springs with regulators. In very good condition. Dim. 118 mm. high. Notes The painted scene above the dial is very similar to that of the singing bird lid of lot No. 421. A very fine gold and enamel snuff box in the I-I. Wilsclorf collection is also decorated by Richter with the same scene after William Hamilton (see biographical notes on p. 252).
