Audubon, John James (1785-1851) Raven, Male . [from] Birds of America . London: R. Havell, 1826-1838. Hand-aquatinted copper-plate engraving, on Whatman 1830 paper, in an antique craftsman style oak frame; No. 21, Plate CI, sheet: 38 1/2 x 25 3/4 in., frame: 46 x 33 in.; a striking image, recently restored, in very good condition. The raven dominates the sheet. His beak open, he is caught with his wings just unfolding, either recently landed or preparing to take flight. The feathers have been masterfully colored with a clever combination of blues, blacks, grays, and whites that suggest the sheen and iridescence of the original.
