Octavo, publisher's gilt cloth, engraved title pages and folding maps, one corner torn with slight loss, illustrated throughout, bindings, worn, torn and shaken, brown endleaves, 6 x 9 in. Deane was an acclaimed journalist and Union spy, whose life ended in a scandalous murder when he was only thirty-six.
