Escher, Maurits Cornelis (1898-1972) Archive, Including Letters. Four autograph letters and notes signed, one typed letter signed, 1960s, and other associated ephemera. Four letters are addressed to Phylis Singer, author of Crystals and Crystal Growing , 1960, and were written by Escher in response to Singer sending a letter and a print in the spring of 1962. In his first letter to her, Escher includes a detailed critique of the wood- or lino-cut, and manages to maintain a warm and encouraging tone throughout. The two notes are on Escher's own cards, featuring his work. 1) Single page typed letter in English addressed to Phylis Singer, dated 21 March 1962, with five ms. corrections in ball point pen, signed in the same pen. Return address in Baarn (rubber stamp?) in upper left hand corner, 8 1/2 x 10 3/4 in., with typed envelope. 2) Single page autograph letter in English on lined paper addressed to Phylis Singer, dated 2 June 1962, written from the Baarn town hospital, mentioning "a serious and very sudden operation," a trip to the U.S., Canada, and M.I.T., 8 1/4 x 10 in., with typed envelope. 3) Autograph note in English written on a printed card with a work by Escher on the verso, addressed to Miss Singer, 19 December 1962, thanking for a Christmas card and a flexagon, which he enjoyed, mentions working five hours a day to improve his health, 5 3/4 x 4 3/4 in., with hand-addressed envelope. 4) Self-enveloping airmail autograph letter in English, addressed to Miss S Read more…
