School of Georges Michel (French, 1763-1843) Landscape with Chalky Cliffs Unsigned. Oil on canvas mounted to panel, 8 x 11 1/2 in. (20.3 x 29.3 cm), framed. Condition: Mounting bubble with craquelure u.l. quadrant, old repairs, surface imperfections, fine craquelure, heavily varnished. Canvas was trimmed and mounted on a wood panel at some earlier time, not a recent treatment. It has a heavy coat of varnish. There are irregularities to the surface that suggest old repairs, perhaps at the time of the mounting. There is a mounting bubble where the canvas is not fully adhered to the panel in the u.l. quadrant that measures about 2 in. wide and 1/2 in. high and has a line of stable craquelure across it. There is some retouch in the l.l. corner in an area measuring 1 x 1 in, a few dots of retouch in the center top and bottom, and a triangular area of broadly brushed retouch in the u.r. corner that looks old and measures 4 in. across the top, 3 in. down the side, and about 5 in. along the hypotenuse. The frame is 2 in. wide.
