James Abbott McNeill Whistler (American, 1834-1903) Clock-Tower, Amboise, (Kennedy, 394). Monogrammed in pencil l.l., monogrammed within the plate. Etching on paper, plate size 7 x 5 in. (17.7 x 12.6 cm), framed. Condition: Trimmed to or just within the plate mark (with a "tab" around the monogram), toning and foxing, not examined out of frame. Provenance: A Rhode Island estate. The etching is on laid paper, trimmed to or just within the plate mark, with a small tab included l.l. to preserve the monogram. The trimmed etching is laid down on wove paper which has been glued to a wooden stretcher. Etching is light struck, as is the support paper. Etching has a 1 inch long crease l.l. corner, and some small stains, toning, and soiling to edges. There is scattered foxing to the etching, but most pronounced foxing is to the supporting paper. On the frame backing paper there is a partial label from Goupil's, Fifth Avenue and TwentySecond Street (NYC). The backing paper is inscribed "J. McN.Whistler - Etching/"Clock Tower - Amboise"/Kennedy No. 394/[done between 1887 & 1900]" in pen u.l. corner, and, in the same hand, "A Howe/Hague picture/at Berry Hill" in pen u.r. corner.
