John William Hill (American, 1812-1879) Path Through the Trees to the Church Signed "J. W. HILL" l.l., with a label from Henry Schultheis Company, New York, affixed to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 19 1/4 x 22 in. (48.9 x 55.9 cm), framed. Condition: Abrasion to u.r. and l.r. quadrants, craquelure, surface grime. The abrasion is deep, vertical 3 1/2 inch line, and cuts through many of the canvas fibers. The painting would benefit from cleaning. The craquelure is visible but stable.
