Toulouse-Lautrec "Le Tocsin (La Depeche)"

Figural print depicting a woman in bonnet and long dress walking at night with a lone dog walking behind her on a path, crescent moon overhead, tree trunks at right behind figure, buildings within wall in background at left. Reference: Delteil 357 II, Adhemar 147 II, Adriani 140 II, Wittrock P 19 B. Note: “La Depeche de Toulouse” was the one of the most important newspapers in Lautrec's native region of France. The editor of the paper, Arthur Huc, was an art lover who had commissioned Lautrec to design a print (La Pendu in 1891). This time he returned to Lautrec to help advertise “Le Tocsin”, a novel that was being serialized in his paper. The first state of the print exists in blue and gray, without any text (see: Swann auction Lot 110 on sale #1945). The image was then transferred onto a new stone and reduced on the right and bottom edges to make room for the lettering, and the colors were changed for the second state.
