Antique Gilt-metal and Rock Crystal Crucifix Watch, signed Jaques Joly, the gilt frame and dial plate with engraved and hatched floral and foliate decoration, applied silver dial with Roman numeral indicators, within a hinged faceted rock crystal case, chain fusee movement with verge escapement, in a fitted shagreen case with Maltese cross and scroll motifs in gold-tone studs, 2 x 1 7/16 in. , signed on the movement, (lacking hand, losses to movement). Note: Specializing in enamel and crystal-cased watches, Jaques Joly (baptized 1622, died 1694) worked in Geneva and became a Master in 1645. Similar examples of 17th century crucifix watches were sold at Antiquorum, Geneva, April 11 and 12, 1992, lots 559 and 560, and at Sotheby's, Geneva, May 11, 2008, lot 81. Lacking pivot area of balance cock, hand. Nicks to corners on the front rock crystal, not obtrusive. Some grime. Minor nick to right lobe on edge to bottom half. Overall light surface scratches. Shagreen case in two pieces, overall wear and tear.
