Pair of Venetian Parcel-gilt and Carved Wood Blackamoor Acrobat Stands, late 19th century, each figure wearing an Egyptian kilt and headdress, balancing on his lower back and hands with legs overhead and head between thighs, on shaped base, ht. 46, wd. 26 1/2, dp. 12 1/2 in.; with glass tops mounted to feet. Literature: Newman, Bruce M., Fantasy Furniture , (New York: Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., 1989), p. 34. Both with scattered surface wear, scuffs, scratches, and paint touch-ups. Each with a later glass top that attaches to the feet with two screws. One stand with restored breaks to wrists and feet. one earring restored or replaced. shrinkage lines at thighs, across shoulders, and at knees. wear to tip of nose. The other stand with shrinkage cracks to wrists, biceps, one side of face, feet, and vertically up back. Surface loss to base with touch-ups. front edge of base with crack to left side, and worming. wear to tip of nose and chin.
