18kt Gold, Peridot, and Diamond Ring, Munsteiner, set with a fantasy-cut peridot edged by diamond melee, size 6 1/4, maker's mark. Note: Bernd Munsteiner (1943-) attended the Academy for Design at Pforzheim, where he studied metal sculpting, painting, and jewelry design. Although already a master of traditional lapidary techniques, the realization that gem cutting methods hadn't changed since the Renaissance spurred Munsteiner to explore a totally new aesthetic. Typical of his work is a geometric, precise cut, conforming more to the naturally occurring crystal and often resulting in a kaleidoscope effect. Andrew Grima, the British modernist court jeweler, was an enthusiast of the work of the Munsteiner atelier.
