Abstract 18kt Gold and Patinated Sterling Silver Brooch, Donald Friedlich, c. 1985, the surface made to imitate black slate, lg. 2 1/2 in., signed. Note: Friedlich graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 1982, and this piece is representative of his early work. According to his Web site, Friedlich's influences include the American southwest, Japanese art and architecture, Isamu Noguchi, and Richard Diebenkorn. His work is in numerous museum collections, including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
