Victorian Sterling Silver, Smoky Quartz, and Agate "Safety" Brooch, Birmingham, c. 1850, designed as a bow set with a large smoky quartz and suspending banded agate drops, engraved accents, lg. 2 3/4 in., with only maker's mark for Hilliard & Thomason and British Registry mark. Note: Pictured in Victorian Jewelry , p. 26. The "safety brooch" was developed by Henry Samuel Ellis of Exeter and uses a sliding safety bolt and spring to secure the pin back in place. Center stone with surface scratches and abrasions. Minor and unobtrusive nicks to agates from knocking against each other. Else without issues.
