American School, 19th Century Portrait of a Husband and Wife. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, c. 1840, depicting the woman wearing a black dress with white lace collar and wearing a beaded jet necklace, her husband in a black jacket, vest and cravat with white shirt and gold watch fob, the couple are seated on red upholstered chairs, with red drapery edged with white lace and gold tassels hanging behind them, 19 x 24 in., unframed. Condition: Tears u.c. and l.l. and a few small paint losses. #3 1/2 in. tear u.c. background between two figures, one about 1 1/2 in. below man's watch key and two small tears and several small spots of paint loss to the left of it.
