Mourning Picture for Mrs. Mary Lothrop of Cohasset, Massachusetts. c. 1832, Unsigned. Watercolor on paper, depicting a scene with seven mourners beside an urn-topped monument inscribed "In memory of Mrs. Mary, wife of Mr. Caleb Lothrop, and daughter of Capt'n Ephraim Snow, who died Aug't 28th 1832. Aged 31. Wife, Mother, Daughter, Sister; names how sweet; How precious each; how lovely when they meet; Farewell bright Orb, life's cloudless day/Has clos'd with Hope's mild arch at even/Go rise and shine with purer ray/Amidst the kindred orbs of heav'n." The background showing trees and the Lothrop home beside the sea, where a ship sails flying an American flag while a cherub hovers above and holding a banner inscribed "Blessed are the dead.;" 16 3/4 x 21 5/8 in., housed in likely original molded wood frame. Condition: Very good, minor tear and creases l.r., small paint loss u.l. sky. Provenance: From Everett Warren Gammon, a descendant of Mary Lothrop and stepfather to the present owner. Note: Mary Snow was born on May 7, 1801 in Truro, Massachusetts, the daughter of Captain Ephraim Snow. The name of Captain Snow's wife is unknown. On November 28, 1819, Mary married Caleb Lothrup, son of Peter and Betsy Tower Lothrop of Cohasset, Massachusetts. The couple resided in Cohasset, where Caleb was a ship-builder and businessman, and together they had seven children.
