Dale Broholm (American, b. 1956 ) Chair Cherry burl, paint, leather Studio Furniture Movement, Boston, Massachusetts Curved back in burl wood with teal green paint accents, triangular sides, leather seat, cylindrical foot rest, some wear, ht. 36 1/2, wd. 21 1/16, dp. 15 1/4 in. Dale Broholm combines hand-hewn craft with computer-aided lasers in his unique, postmodern furniture design. He often juxtaposes native with exotic hardwoods (such as walnut with satinwood), as well as Western and Eastern architectural forms, to create work that is at once classical and contemporary. Much of his work is whimsically self-aware—through his use of veneers and faux-finishes, he calls attention to his works' surfaces and the interplay of appearances with reality. Based in Boston, Broholm has received a number of private and public commissions, including the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Smith College Museum of Art, and a barrel back chair comparable to the present work is in the Smithsonian American Art Museum. He graduated with honors from Boston University and is an adjunct faculty member at Rhode Island School of Design.
