Important Extensive Collection of Forty-four Italian Creche Figures, 18th/19th century, comprising an array of male and female figures of various age and ethnicity, all modeled standing, mounted to wood bases, except for one angel intended to be suspended, carved and painted wood hands and limbs, set with glass eyes, all elaborately clothed and accessorized, figure ht. approx. 11 to 14 in. Provenance: Known as "The Whitney Collection," this large collection of figures was exhibited at Jordan Marsh, and at the Wenham Historical Association during the 1950s and 60s. All with age typical wear, some minor shrinkage cracks, some loose joints, minor paint loss and/or scattered in-painting. some scattered glue repairs. Fabric with age typical wear, toning, and some tears (especially to silks). Three male and one female figure detached from their bases (the female figure with end of foot off, but present [needs regluing]). Angel missing lower section of right arm. comprising 33 male figures, and 11 female figures (including the angel).
