10-inch Universal Equinoctial Ring Dial by W. & S. Jones, Holborn, London England, circa 1790, two concentric brass rings folding flat when not in use, a meridian ring with N and S flanking the zero line on the latitude scale and calibrated 0-90, the reverse calibrated 0-90, the equinoctial ring is engraved with a Roman numeral hours and Arabic minutes on the front surface and inside edge, the reverse inscribed with maker's inscription W & S. Jones, Holborn. London, , the central bridging bar with sliding peep hole is engraved with the months on one side, declination scale and zodiac signs on the other, all suspended by a brass ring. Literature: Gloria Clifton, Directory of British Scientific Instrument Makers, 1550-1851 , pp. 154-155. Surface presently with an approximately 50 year old lacquer; no significant replacements.
