18-inch Ebony Octant Attributed to Thomas Biggs, New York, c. 1790, sliding brass index arm with engraved decoration, bone scale divided 0-90, vernier marked 10-5-15-10, the 0 denoted with three stars, thumbscrew lock, brass pinnula, magnifier, mirror, shades, and pine carrying case painted bottle green with a 9 x 7 1/4 in. printed maker's label inside the lid reading Tho(s). Biggs, Mathematical Instrument Maker, has removed from No. 32 W...ftreet to No. 8, Water-ftreet, 18 Doors(?) below the coffee-house, Where he continues carrying on the faid bufinefs in its various branches as ufual, Being the only perfon at present in this City that has ferved an apprenticeship to the faid branch, and having for a number of years carried on with the approval of his employers, and given the fulleft fatisfaction, he hopes for the favours of the public, and the attention of his former Cuftomers, being determined to observe the utmost care in performing their Work, and to execute it on the cheapeft terms. Carrying case needs gluing, Thomas Biggs label once had an overpaste, is very fragile and shows evidence of recent covering removed, but appears to have been with the lid, bone scales in good condition, brass in oxidized state.
