Pieced and Appliqued Cotton Quilt Panel, America, 19th century, polychrome printed cotton segments with numerous stylized human figures, animals, hearts, leaves, and shapes on a off-white cotton ground with sawtooth borders, (scattered losses), ht. 32 x 84 in. This quilt panel is hand-stitched, the red border is wool twill and the quilt is backed with white cotton. At a later time someone placed white backing fabric over the original and machine stitched it around theree edges and through all the layers about every 7 or 8 in. On one edge/corner area the tan sawtooth border is worn through to the backing and there's an angled tear through the background fabric nearby. Other than that there is some fading and toning and spots of fraying on the red twill border.
