Percival Leonard Rosseau (American, 1859-1937) Stylish Mack /Portrait of a Pointer in a Landscape Signed and dated "Rosseau/1933" l. l., titled on the reverse, identified on a presentation plaque. Oil on canvas, 34 x 27 in. (86.4 x 68.6 cm), framed. Condition: Surface grime, retouch. N.B. Percival Leonard Rosseau was born in Louisiana and had worked as a commodities broker, and cattle driver, and cowboy before moving to Paris at the age of 35 to study at the Academie Julian. While in Paris he discovered a talent for portraying animals. Rosseau returned to the U.S. in 1915, and enjoyed a successful career painting hunting dogs. He set up his studio in Old Lyme, Connecticut, but frequently traveled to North Carolina, where Percy Rockefeller set up a studio for him on his private hunting ground at Overhills Club in Fayetteville. Please note that the canvas is stretched over board. Although the work has not been viewed out of its frame, the canvas does NOT appear to be mounted to the board. Retouch is a few scattered small areas and along the far right edge. Some additional mild varnish inconsistencies. There is also some scattered craquelure with gentle lifting. The work would probably benefit from a gentle cleaning.
