Oil on canvas mounted on board, 28 x 24 in. (71.1 x 61.0 cm), framed. Condition: Retouch, varnish inconsistencies, craquelure. Exhibitions: The Eight: A New Spirit in American Art, The Danforth Museum, Framingham, Massachusetts, October 26, 1986- January 4, 1987. N.B. An Ohio native, Robert Henri moved to New York and then New Jersey before beginning his artistic studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia in 1886. In 1888, Henri, like many young artists at the time, ventured to Paris to attend the Academie Julian and Ecole des Beaux Arts. While in France, Henri studied with such artists as Jean Leon Gerome and Leon Bonnat. He also traveled extensively and was exposed to the Impressionist movement and artistic styles that broke with the academic tradition. Henri returned to the U.S. in 1891, later becoming a prominent teacher and leading member of The Eight (later called the Ash Can School). Retouch is many dots, dashes and small-to-medium sized areas throughout. Additionally there are some light washes of retouch and mild varnish inconsistencies. Craquelure appears stable.
