Anthony Thieme (American, 1888-1954) Bahama Industry Signed (incised) "A. Thieme" l.r., titled in the artist's hand on the reverse, identified on a period label from Grand Central Art Galleries, New York, affixed to the reverse. Oil on canvas, 30 1/2 x 36 1/4 in. (77.5 x 92.1 cm), framed. Condition: Scattered craquelure (and very slight canvas deformation along stretcher bar), surface grime. N.B. Anthony Thieme, best known for his Impressionistic plein-air coastal views and seascapes, was born in Rotterdam, Holland, but came to the U.S. as a young artist setting up a studio in Cape Ann, Massachusetts. Although Thieme was attracted to the colorful surroundings and sparkling waters of Rockport and Gloucester, he continued to travel throughout his career. He spent the winter months in St. Augustine, Florida (where he set up a studio in 1947) but also traveled to Mexico, Guatemala and the Bahamas. He was "seeking new challenges to capture on canvas" (1) and his paintings reflected the warm sunlight, vibrant colors, rich textures and varied cultures of these places. (1) Curtis, Judith A. Anthony Thieme 1888-1954 (Rockport, Massachusetts: Rockport Art Association, 1999). Pg 12. There are a few very small scattered losses in the lower left quadrant. Mild scattered craquelure appears stable. The work would probably benefit from a gentle cleaning.
