Augustus Saint-Gaudens (American, 1848-1907) Commemorative Medal of the Cornish Celebration June 23, 1905 Unsigned, inscribed "[Names of Participants] AMOR VINCIT [on altar]... IN AFFECTIONATE REMEMBRANCE OF THE CELEBRATION OF JUNE XXIII. MCMV AUGUSTA AND AUGUSTUS SAINT GAUDENS..." within the cast l.c., stamped "ESTATE OF Eric Pape 1870-1938" on the backing. Silvered bronze, approx. 3 1/8 x 1 3/4 in. (7.9 x 4.4 cm), in a presentation frame. Condition: Not examined out of frame. Provenance: Through the estate of Eric Pape. N.B. This medal is after a plaque occasioned by the "Masque of the Golden Bowl" held at Cornish, New Hampshire, to celebrate the twentieth anniversary of Saint Gaudens' founding of the Cornish art colony. The Masque was held on the summer solstice of 1905 at Saint Gauden's estate of Aspet, and was written by playwright Louis Evans Shipman. There were over seventy participants, including Eric Pape, Maxfield Parrish (his masks decorate the trees in the medal), Kenyon Cox, and Percy MacKaye. As part of the festivities, Saint Gaudens was honored with a golden cup.
