Unmounted Sapphire, the cushion-shape faceted sapphire weighing 10. 66 cts., (with small cavities and burn marks), sold together with a gilt-metal and velvet coronet and invoice from Cartier, unsigned, (coronet with damage). Note: Property from the estate of Lady Gosford. The Countess of Gosford (nee Beatrice Claflin) was an American heiress who married the fifth Earl of Gosford, a decorated veteran of the Boer and First World Wars. After their wedding in 1928, the couple sailed immediately for London, where Lady Gosford purchased her first Rolls Royce. She is shown here in the gown and Cartier coronet made for her attendance at the coronation of George VI. The coronet is accompanied by the invoice from Cartier London.
