Gilt-lacquered Wood Figure in a Shrine, Japan, late Edo period, 19th century, carved wood standing figure of Jizo Bosatsu, holding a shakujo (staff) in his right hand and a cintamani (wish-fulfilling jewel) in the left, his benign face with a byakugo (whirl of hair in the centre of the forehead), wearing an elaborately gilt decorated robe and with a kohai (halo) behind, set on a multi-galleried plinth consisting of a conventional double-lotus pedestal, a carved green-colored wave formation, and a lower section with a crouching lion, in a shrine fitted with chased brass mounts, figure and stand ht. 14, shrine 17 x 6 1/2 x 5 1/2 in.
