Pair of Satsuma Vases, Japan, 19th century, both in the shape of a tree trunk, the exterior of one vase finely painted in enamels and gilt with grasshoppers traveling in two separate groups across a field with a multitude of flowers including morning glories, hydrangea, chrysanthemums, and lilies reserved on a crackled ground, one group carrying fruit and flowers, the other a fan-shaped butterfly, an opening on either side imitating a hole in the tree, with vividly modeled insects residing inside; the other vase painted with frogs, butterflies, grasshoppers, and dragonflies in various attitudes interacting with their natural surroundings including flowers and a pond, decorated similarly with two tree holes, gilt mark on the lower section and base unglazed with ink writing to both vases, ht. 13 1/4 in. Small cracks to the base due to kiln flaws; loss to the gilt; chips to the foot rim of one vase
