Pair of Embroidered Panels, China, Qianlong period (1736-1795), one finely embroidered with two courtly ladies in a garden scene, watching a phoenix flying by, with birds and cranes amidst a myriad of flowers, the other with two ladies in a water-front pavilion, surrounded by herons and peacocks, reserved on a yellow ground, wood frame with carved borders in openwork inset with mother of pearl and floral scroll in brass, glazed, 17 1/4 x 23 in. Provenance: Tritton Antiques, Cannes, France, August 1927 (original document attached to the back). Loss to the brass floral scroll to the border of the frame
