Calligraphy, Wang Dongling (b. 1945), signed and with nine seals, dated xuchen year (1988), 20 1/2 x 20 in. N.B. Wang Dongling graduated from the National Academy of Fine Arts, Zhengjiang Province in 1981 and currently teaches there. Trained in classical calligraphy and most noted for his cursive script, Wang is defining modern calligraphy in many new directions. In this work, he experiments with the capability of ink and brush strokes, as well as the intriguing visual effect by juxtaposing different scripts in an orderly manner while introducing chaos by randomly interspersing seals in between. Wang's works were in the exhibitions, including, among others, "Chinese Five Thousand Years Civilization", Guggenheim Museum, New York, USA and Bilbao, Spain, 1998; "Brush and Ink: The Chinese Art of Writing", Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, 2006; and are in the collections of the British Museum, Harvard Art Museum, and various other museums and private collections. Slight glue stain and foxing to the back of the mount.
