Hanging Scroll, Fu Xiaoshi (b. 1932), ink and colors on paper, depiction of a lady in the garden, dated spring in wuchen year (1988), dedicated to Professor Lin Fengzao in Nanjing, signed, one seal, 26 1/2 x 17 1/2 in. N.B. Fu Xiaoshi, son of Fu Baoshi (1904-1965), is noted for his boneless style and novel application of traditional media-ink and color. His female figures are often modeled with a pronounced three-dimensional presence as those in oil paintings. The current lot probably portrays a female protagonist from the Chinese classical masterpiece Dream of the Red Chamber . The diagonal composition, vast areas of intentional void, and the vigorous yet abstract brushstrokes in depicting the trees, all contribute to bringing attention to the central figure and her complicated emotional state.
