Large Blue and White Bowl, China, Wanli period (1573-1620), Zhangzhou ware from Binh Thuan shipwreck (c. 1608), the deep bowl decorated in the interior with a central medallion of beribboned lanterns encircled by four mirror-shaped cartouches of chrysanthemum, prunus, and lanterns in the cavetto, all on a checkered ground, the broad everted mouth rim with peony, prunus sprigs, and bamboo amongst rockwork, the exterior with lotus designs painted in freehand style, ht. 3 1/2, dia. 12 in. N.B. In the late 1990s, a large ship was discovered offshore of Binh Thuan province in the South Vietnam. The ship contained ceramic wares made in the Zhangzhou area of China in the late 16th/early 17th century. Characteristics of Zhangzhou pieces, such as kiln grits adhering to the base, the heavy potted bodies, and the use of various shades of blue and freehand painting style full of spontaneity and vivacity, can be seen on the current bowl.
