Chinese, Qing Dynasty (1644-1912), 19th century. A matched pair of yoke back officials or scholar wood armchairs, probably Shanxi Province, retaining traces of black paint, the scrolling crest rail with scroll ears, above shaped brackets, extending beyond the stiles, the central curved rectangular splat pierced at the top with circular character medallion over a rectangular panel pierced carved with a beast and foliage and flanked by turned curving stiles issuing scrolled arms enclosing the rectangular seat frame centered with hard woven mat raised on plain supports joined by a scroll carved apron, a foot rail and twin side stretchers. Approximate height 44.12", width 26" (arm to arm), seat depth 15.5", seat height 20.6".
