American, circa 1880's. A beaverskin D'Orsay style top hat in black or very dark brown with grosgrain ribbon trim around base of side band culminating in a knotted bow at left temple, a molded brim with matching grosgrain trim around turned up edge, and tan silk interior and brown leather lining. Marked to interior of crown tip with Prout and King Hatters, Newark, Ohio mark, and with label to interior of side band with original Prout & King price label indicating $5 price and size label of "7 1/8". Hat accompanied by original hat box with indistinguishable round seal on front above which is inscribed "Excellent Styles" along with size and price of the hat. Box is marked to the underside "Dr. Hamill Newark Ohio" indicating ownership by the town doctor who died in 1894. Accompanied by 1910 note on paper from Chas. H. Gillespie & Sons in Jersey City, NJ. Accompanied by second lidded hat box from Stetson Hats. Hat approximately 6.75" tall. Original box approximately 8" tall x 12.5" deep. Stetson box approximately 12.25" tall x 13.75" deep.
