Autographed letter signed ("H. Hamlin"), one page, on a bifolium, April 14, 1846. Hamlin (1809-1891) writes to the President [James K. Polk] a letter of endorsement for a Reverend John Blake of Maine for the office of the Chaplain in the Navy. Hannibal Hamlin served as Vice President under Abraham Lincoln from 1861-1865; prior to this position Hamlin served in the U.S. Senate, House and as Governor of Maine. He writes the present letter as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives. 9 2/3 x 7 1/2 inches folded.
