Seymour and Phiz. First edition, largely first state text (mixed first and later states parts 12 and 19/20), 22 of 43 plates in first state, lacking Pickwick Advertiser in all but two parts, with 15 of 34 back inset ads (plus two not noted in Hatton & Cleaver), lacking four front inset ads, per usual, four of seven Author and Publisher Addresses are present, including the Address by Dickens in part 15 explaining the absence of the part for the preceding month. Wrappers with various degrees of wear and soiling, with early rebacking to spines on 17 parts with matching paper; some browning along inner margin on two parts from re-backing; a few scattered repaired tears to text and wrappers; plates in two parts with foxing, but otherwise text and plates are largely clean internally.
