LONGINES REF. 46 G.C.T. MILITARY STOP WATCH Longines Watch Co., Swiss, G.C.T. (Greenwich Civil Time), No. 6018948. Made for the Royal Canadian Air Force by Ontario Hughes Owens Co. Ltd., circa 1940. Very fine, rare and unusual, keyless, antimagnetic, center seconds, stainless steel “Staybrite” precision pocket watch with 24 hour dial and power reserve indication. Accompanied by original numbered fitted box signed “Ontario Hughes Owens Co. Ltd., Ottowa.” To be sold without reserve Four-body, demi-bassine, polished, inner antimagnetic cover. Matte silver with painted 24 hour graduation, outer minute track, sector for the power reserve indication below 12. Blued steel spade hands. Cal. 21.29, fausses cotes decoration, 21 jewels, straight line gold lever escapement, monometallic balance adjusted to temperatures and 5 positions, self-compensating Breguet balance spring, combination cam and swan neck micrometer regulator, indirect center seconds. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 53 mm. Notes G.C.T. watches were used for navigational purposes on military airplanes. These types of watches were typically ordered by the Royal Canadian Air Force and U.S. Army Corps from American watch manufacturers such as Hamilton, Elgin and Waltham. With increased demand due to World War II., Swiss companies like Longines and Agassiz supplied similar precision timepieces.
