Torun, London, circa 1700. Fine and unusual gilt-brass and silver moon phase astronomical Louis XIV oignon with full calendar. Double body gilt brass oignon, fully overlaid with polished silver. Matted gilt brass with apertures for the clays of the week, the month and the four parts of the day, subsidiary silver chapter rings for the time with Roman hours numerals, the date and the age of the moon with inner moon phase aperture. Bluedsteel baluster turned hands. Hinged gilt-brass full plate with tulip pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain steel three-arm balance, English gilt-brass cock, flat balance spring. Signed on the back plate. Diam. 57 mm. Notes The case of this watch is similar to the oignon type, much in favour in France and Switzerland for watches made after the invention of the balance spring by Christian Huygens and which are at the origin of the popular name given to these early balance spring watches.
