Philippe Gros a Paris, No. 219, with Paris hallmarks for 1763. "Le Temps delivrant la write du Mensonge et de la Calomnie " Very fine and rare 18K gold and enamel quarter dumb repeating watch. Double body, Louis XV, the bezels chased in a Greek pattern, the back enamel panel painted in polychrome colours with an allegory of Truth being liberated by Kronos who strikes down Untruth and Slander. Diamond push pieces. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minutes ring. Gold Louis XV hands. Hinged gilt-brass full plate with square baluster pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt-brass continental Louis XV cock with polished-steel end-piece. Repeating on the edge of the case by depressing the pendant. Signed on the back plate. Diam. 45 mm. Notes Although it is not signed, the high quality enamel on this watch, judging from its colour and the technique of painting, is to be compared with the work of the best French enamellers of the period, such as Hamelin and Duhamel.
