The CitternMelly & Roux à Constance, circa 1810. Fine and amusing 18 ct. gold and enamel pearl-set form watch with a concealed dial, designed as a Cittern. White enamel, Roman chapters, outer minute ring. Blued-steel Breguet hands. 22 mm o, hinged, gilt brass full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement, fusee and chain, plain three-arm brass balance, two-footed cock pierced and engraved with scrolls and foliage.Signed on the movement.Diam. 67 x 28 mm. Published in the Sandberg book, page 446-447. Notes The case bears the marks of the Département du Léman, annexed to the new French Republic from 1798-1814.The cittern, also called the 'English guitar' during the eighteenth century, is an instrument of great antiquity, being exceedingly popular in Shakespeare's time.
