Berthoud A Paris, Swiss, circa 1790. Fine 18k yellow gold pocket watch with skeletonized movement, centrally mounted balance wheel and day-date calendar. Two-body, “Directoire”, polished. White enamel, Arabic numerals, dot minute markers and Arabic quartermarkers, inner date and days of the week rings. Gold fleur-de-lys hour and minute hands, blued steel day and datehands. 51 mm., skeletonized, foliate chased and engraved, five-sided baluster pillars, fusee and chain, first andsecond wheels with navette shaped spokes, verge escapement, centrally placed brass balance wheel with bluedsteel balance spring mounted in a foliate pierced and chased circular carriage, regulation arm.Signed on the dial.Diam. 60 mm. Notes The crown wheel pinion of this watch has been made much longer than is usual to allow the balance wheel to be placed in the center of the movement. The result is very aesthetically pleasing. Although the dial is signed "Berthoud A Paris", this watch would have been made by a contemporary of Berthoud in another workshop.
