“1/4 Century Club" Rolex for Eaton, “1/4 Century Club", Ref. 5590/ 1011. Made in 1965, presented to Malvern G. Smith on his becoming a member of "The Timothy Eaton Quarter Century Club," 1940-1965. Fine and rare, center seconds, self-winding, water-resistant, l4K yellow gold gentleman's wristwatch. To be sold without reserve Three-body, polished, screw-down case back with dedication inscription, Oyster crown, lapidated lugs. Matte silver with applied gold letters "1/4 Century Club" instead of numerals, outer minute track and luminous dots. Luminous yellow gold "alpha" hands. Cal. 1530, rhodium-plated, 26 jewels, straightline lever escapement, monometallic balance, shock absorber, selfcompensating Breguet balance spring. Case and movement signed, dial signed "Eaton". Diam. 33 mm. Thickness 12 mm. Notes Watches bearing this case design are called “bombé” by collectors. 1/4 Century Club Timothy Eaton (1834-1907) opened his first department store in Toronto in 1869. By the early 20th century T. Eaton Co. Ltd. had become one of Canada’s largest retailers. The 1/4 Century Club watches, made from the 1930s until as late as the 1960s, were given by the company to employees in thanks for 25 years of loyal service.
