Attributed to John H. Belter (American/ German, 1804-1863), circa 1860. A pair of Rococo Revival rosewood slipper chairs, the oval form back comprising seven layers of laminated rosewood, with a heavily carved openwork foliate crest centered by a rectangular cabochon, upholstered with tufted aquamarine and cream fabric, with pierced scroll side supports and cavetto molded shoe form, over the seat with conforming fabric and serpentine seat rail surmounting a conforming apron with carved cabochon motifs, the relief foliate carved knees terminating in stylized hoof front feet and raking back legs. Approximate height 39.5", width 19", depth 23", seat to floor 16.5".
