Attributed to John H. Belter (American/ German, 1804-1863), circa 1860. A carved rosewood rocking chair with laminated back in the Rococo Revival style, the curved crest decorated with two acanthus scrolls surmounted by a central acanthus flourish over a heavily and elaborately carved pierced back decorated with large acanthus leaves as well as grape leaves, vines, and a blossoming flower with flourishing anthers and filaments, the arms with scrolled armrests with carved acanthus leaves over curved supports with carved leaves, the seat upholstered in foliate patterned brocade in shades of olive, gold, and coral, with serpentine edge, over a serpentine s-scroll and acanthus-carved seat rail, the acanthus carved knees terminating in two cabriole front legs headed by Ionic capitals and acanthus leaves and raking back legs, on runners. Unmarked. Approximate height 39.5", width 26.5", depth (including runners) 31", seat to floor 17.75".
