Ceres Gaudet a Paris, No. 147. Made circa 1770. Very fine and rare, quarter-repeating a toc, 18K gold and painted on enamel pocket watch with short gold chain, ratchet key and tassel. To be sold without reserve Two-body, “Louis XVI”, No. 354, polished, the back cover decorated with a finely painted on enamel oval scene depicting Ceres in a landscape, turquoise enamel border with engraved gold leaves and red and white flowers. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer minute track and large five minute numerals. Pierced foliate gilt hands. 33.5 mm., gilt, full plate, turned flared pillars, fusee and chain, verge escapement with micrometric potence adjustment, three-arm brass balance, flat balance spring, continental pierced and engraved foliate balance cock with steel endplate, silver regulation dial, repeating with two hammers on the case, silence button in the bezel. Movement signed. Diam. 42.5 mm. Notes Ceres The Roman goddess of agriculture, grain, and the love a mother bears for her child. She was the daughter of Saturn and Ops, the sister of Jupiter, and the mother of Proserpine. Ceres was a kind and benevolent goddess to the Romans and they had a common expression, "fit for Ceres," which meant splendid.
