William Carpenter, London, No. 4560. Made for the Chinese market, circa 1790. Fine and rare, gilt metal and paste-set quarter-striking, two-train clockwatch with centre-seconds and stop feature. White enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute track. Gold ovoid hands. 36 mm, hinged dial plate, gilt brass full plate with tapered cylindrical pillars, two-train, going train with fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain steel threearm balance, single-footed cock pierced and engraved with foliage, diamond endstone, silver regulation disc, striking the hours and quarters on a bell in the back of the case. Movement and dust cover signed. Diam. 54 mm. Notes William Carpenter (1770-1805) Best known for his elaborate musical automata, several examples of which are preserved in the Peiping Museum.
