J. A.L.A., South German, circa 1680. Fine and very rare Baroque style silver and tortoiseshell- mounted timepiece mantel clock. Oak and softwood carcass with tortoiseshell-veneered sides and base with silvered ripple mouldings, the front of the base drawer,columns dial surround and top decorated with sheet silverwork embossed with summer flowers and foliage. Winged bail finial, the sliding back panel and surround veneered in palisander wood. Rectangular gilt copper dial plate with engraved cherub spandrels, the centre with a profusion of summer flowers, aperture below for viewing the pendulum. Silver chapter-ring with Roman numerals and half-hour divisions. Single blued-steel tulip hand. Circular gilt plates, turned balluster pillars, fusee with original longlink chain, short train, verge escapement with very light bob pendulum, ratchet wheel set-up with large pierced and engraved click cock and blued-steel spring. Signed with initiais on the backplate. In very good condition. Dims. 39 cm. x 25 cm. x 13 cm.
